Hog Rings for Fencing

How Do You Use Hog Rings for Fencing?

Hog rings are often used to connect the chain mesh to the bottom tension wire that runs from post to post. The most important thing you can do when installing fence hog rings is to use a pair of specialty pliers. While it is possible to use normal pliers, there is a good chance that the hog ring will slip out. Special hog ring pliers have indentations in the jaws that securely hold the rings.

The actual process of using fence hog rings is very simple: all you have to do is find a spot along the bottom of the fence where the wires intersect. Then, you will place a hog ring in the pliers with the open end facing outward, and squeeze the pliers so that the hog ring closes over both the chain links and the tension wire.

Commercial fencing companies will often use a special pneumatic hog ring gun. This fastens the ring with a quick trigger pull. Due to its cost, hog ring guns are not a preferred option.

What Type of Hog Rings Are Used in Fencing?

There are several types of hog rings available. When you are planning to use hog rings for fencing, you should use a heavier gauge, as well as hog rings that have blunt ends. The steel rings that are about 3/4 of an inch in diameter are the right material and size for fencing.

The two most common gauges for hog rings are 9-gauge and 11-gauge. The 11-gauge hog rings are for light use. However, the heavy-duty 9-gauge hog rings are what you want to use for fencing. You should also use the C-shaped hog rings for fencing, rather than the D-shaped or U-shaped versions.

How Many Hog Rings Do You Need for a Fence?

In general, you need to use one hog ring for every one foot of fencing. You can simply measure how long your fence is and order your hog rings accordingly. You can also adjust this one-foot rule based on your needs.

If you are securing chain-link fencing in a residential area without much wildlife, you probably only need to use one hog ring for every two feet of fencing. This is because there will be fewer animals trying to crawl under your fence.

You can also increase the number of hog rings you use if you want to make the bottom of your fence more secure. For example, if you live in a rural area and you routinely have small animals trying to get under your fence, you may want to install a hog ring every six inches. It’s probably a good idea to start with one hog ring for every foot of fencing and add more if you have a vermin problem.
